National Women's Friendship Month
A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature. —Ralph Waldo Emerson
Blood may be thicker than water, but rarely is a bond stronger than the one between women friends. Marlene Dietrich said that the friend you can call at 4 a.m. is the one worth keeping, and that may be true, but as clubwomen know, there is a veritable rainbow of friends we meet throughout our lives that matter deeply to us.
September 2009 is National Women's Friendship Month, a tradition started by Kappa Delta sorority in 1999. It's the perfect time to reflect on the women in our lives who have supported and changed us, and to celebrate the women we serve alongside as we support and change our communities. It's no secret that women, working together, can change the world; we see it happen every day. When GFWC founder Jane Croly formed her women's club, Sorosis, meaning "a sweet flavor of many fruits," the name perfectly encompassed the value to be found in friendships between women: sweetness, variety, nourishment.
Use this time, as summer turns to fall, to pay tribute to, and show thanks for, your women friends. There's no end to the ways, big and small, we can honor each other, but consider these five ideas as you think of ways to specially rejoice in your friends this month:
Serve together. Of course, clubwomen are used to serving alongside each other on a variety of projects, but a focus this month on helping other women—women who perhaps have lost their connections to their own women friends—would remind us how important these connections really are. The women at your local women's shelter need your friendship.
Learn together. Nothing brings friends together like learning something new. Whether it's in a cooking class or a book club, broadening your horizons together will strengthen any friendship.
Play together. You want your friends to live forever, and there's no better medicine for strong bodies and minds than to get out there and move. Get a group together and walk around the park! Throw a Frisbee! Go bowling! You won't believe how the time flies when you're exercising alongside women who interest you.
Make together. Crafting of every kind has seen a huge resurgence in recent years. Scrapbooking, quilting and knitting in particular are booming in popularity among every generation of women. It's time to dust off those crochet hooks and share what you know—creative projects shared among friends enrich us for a lifetime.
Laugh together. Is there a more beautiful music than the sound of your friends' laughter? You don't need a special occasion to get together and laugh, but why not make one, anyway? Plan a movie night featuring classic American funny women like Rosalind Russell, Judy Holliday and Lucille Ball. Or, round up your girlfriends for a fun and interesting night out, and support women comediennes at your local comedy clubs.
