Bike to Work Day

With gas prices hovering around $4 a gallon, there’s never been a better time to consider alternative forms of transportation such as bicycling.  The League of American Bicyclists has designated May 16 as National Bike to Work Day, so go ahead and bike to the office, a friend’s house, or even just around your neighborhood!

Cities and towns across the country are making it easier than ever to get where you need to go by bike. Did you know that bicycling is the second most preferred method of transportation after the automobile or that 41.3 million Americans (20 percent) rode their bikes last year? Communities are responding to this growing demand and building bike paths and creating bike-friendly routes along existing streets. The LAB has designated more than 80 American cities as “Bike Friendly Communities”.

In addition to the health benefits you get from biking, choosing a bicycle over a car helps prevent the build up of harmful air pollutants such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Who wants to breathe all that in?  So tell your co-workers, friends and neighbors that you’ll be riding your bike in on Friday May 16 for you health as well as theirs!
