Communications Coordinator

REPORTS TO Communications and Public Relations Director

CLASSIFICATION Exempt, Full time

DESCRIPTION The Communications Coordinator, under the supervisor of the Communications and Public Relations Director, develops and coordinates marketing and communications materials to promote GFWC, its members, and activities. In this role, s/he develops and executes content work plans and projects that support GFWC’s strategic initiatives and overall marketing communications needs. Further, s/he will develop, write, and edit articles for GFWC’s publications ensuring key messages are delivered succinctly and effectively. Performance will be measured relative to the attainment of the stated objectives and goals and significant accomplishments related to the work plan and position responsibilities.

In addition to the below list of responsibilities, the Communications Coordinator will carry out assigned tasks that are consistent with the general area of responsibilities of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Writes and edits communication materials to promote GFWC, its members, programs, and activities to ensure a consistent GFWC message and style.
  • Assists with the distribution of e-newsletters and other electronic communications and participates in the development of communications resources and tools, including routine/daily updates to the website(s) and social media postings.
  • Prepares and updates publicity materials to assist local clubs with public relations efforts.
  • Proactively monitors website content, assuring accuracy and timeliness of information, and updates accordingly.
  • Promotes accomplishments of all GFWC awards, contests, and grants.
  • Participates in staff committees and task forces as assigned;
  • When assigned as project leader, establishes project plans and outlines expectations and responsibilities, and communicates to all staff;
  • Communicates and responds to member inquires in a timely fashion;
  • Attends and participates in GFWC Conventions, governance meetings, and other meetings and special events as required;
  • Performs core function and position-related responsibilities and tasks as requested and required;
  • Develops and participates in a team work culture;
  • Works on assigned cross-functional project teams and serves as project leader as requested;
  • Attends inter-department meetings; and
  • Undertakes special projects at the direction of the Communications and Publications Director and/or International President.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills, strong research abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work well with GFWC staff and volunteers/members
  • Understanding of GFWC policies, purpose, and structure and ability to communicate GFWC’s mission, objectives, and accomplishments
  • Experience in project management desirable
  • Ability to mentor and foster collaboration among staff and organizational membership
  • Proven ability to strategically promote concepts and products to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently or on a team, always showing respect for the diverse constituencies at GFWC and within its membership
  • Detail oriented with superior problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills; able to prioritize multiple tasks, organize work, delegate effectively, and follow through independently
  • Enthusiasm for volunteer service
  • Understanding of WordPress content management system for the GFWC website and online e-message services such as Bloomerang.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and social media platforms and practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or related area
  • One to three years prior experience in communications, public relations, media relations, or public affairs;
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Graphic design principles and current industry software (such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign), preferred
  • Knowledge of digital photography and video editing a plus
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, written, organizational, and computer skills
  • Writing samples required
