Wednesday, April 2, 2008: GFWC's Convention Service Project is a shoe-in to be a great opportunity to benefit residents of women's shelters throughout the Chicago area. GFWC is asking Convention attendees to bring a pair of new or gently-used shoes to the morning business session on Sunday, June 28, 2008. After the session, we'll donate the shoes to help victims of domestic violence get back on their feet!

This shoe drive was inspired by our opening speaker, Yvonne Williams, author of It’s All About The Shoes: Hope, Heartbreak and The Search for The Perfect Pair, who will share her story surviving three simultaneous primary cancers and living with gusto and flair. Following the morning session on Saturday, June 28, Yvonne will sign copies of her book, which will be on sale at Convention.

On Sunday morning, June 29, Convention attendees will learn how to Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman from Gail Evans, former executive vice president at CNN  and host of the weekly radio segment "It's Not Just A Man's World," which is syndicated to 1900 CNN Radio affiliates across the United States. Following the session, Gail will sign copies of her book, which will be on sale at Convention.

At the Monday, June 30, morning session, author Sarah Sladek will share her expertise on successfully recruiting and retaining younger generations of members. Sarah will sign copies of her book, New Recruit: What Your Association Needs to Know About X, Y, and Z, which will be on sale at Convention.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008: The 117th GFWC Annual International Convention includes the prestigious Empowering Women banquet, where GFWC will honor outstanding examples of empowered women who are making their communities, and indeed the world, better for all. The 2008 honorees are:

»Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke

»Bulgarian Ambassador to the United States Elena Poptodorova

»President of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Caryl Stern

Monday, March 31, 2008: GFWC is pleased to announce that actress and author Robin Givens will be the featured speaker at the GFWC Domestic Violence Awareness Luncheon on Tuesday, July 1, as part of the 117th GFWC Annual International Convention in Chicago.

This luncheon, recognizing GFWC's President's Special Project: Domestic Violence Awareness, will begin with a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of domestic violence, and, together, all attendees will conclude the luncheon by celebrating the millions of survivors.

During the luncheon, Robin will share her powerful story about her turbulent and violent marriage to the famed heavyweight boxer, Mike Tyson. Following the luncheon, GFWC members will have the opportunity to meet Robin and purchase a signed copy of her book, Grace Will Lead Me Home.
