Special Collections

Special Collections include archives and manuscript collections, photographs, art, artifacts, and audio-visual materials that document women volunteers, particularly within women’s clubs. Collections currently within this category include:

Oral History Collection (available online). The collection consists of hundreds of recordings that detail the contributions of GFWC clubwomen to their communities.

Good Housekeeping UN Decade for Women Collection, 1975-1985. This important collection includes Good Housekeeping correspondence with hundreds of American women’s organizations; audio and video interviews and panel discussions with prominent women of the UN Decade; press kits and other materials from conferences on women’s issues; and survey responses from nearly 1800 delegates and delegates-at-large to the U.s. National Conference of Women held in Houston, Texas in 1977. 

Freddie Hilp WWI Overseas Service Unit Photograph Collection, Mar-Jun 1919. A native of Nevada, Frederika (Freddie) Hilp was a member of the GFWC WWI Overseas Service Unit. Hilp was responsible for taking a rolling canteen of “comfort” items to American and English soldiers at remote sites. 

Club Histories Collection. This collection includes manuscript or unbound typescript club histories, histories and photographs of buildings preserved by member clubs or libraries founded by them, and audio recordings and transcripts of oral histories submitted to GFWC.

Vertical Files. The Vertical Files consist of subject files related to women’s issues and research papers prepared using WHRC collections.
 
Art and Artifact Collection. This collection consists of art and artifacts relevant to the history of GFWC and women volunteers.  It includes items of national significance donated by member clubs as well as decorative art produced with GFWC’s authorization to promote its work or highlight the history of women volunteers.
