The Jane Cunningham Croly Award for Excellence in Journalism Covering Issues of Concern to Women
The 16th Annual Jane Cunningham Croly Award for Excellence in Journalism Covering Issues of Concern to Women was awarded at the 120th GFWC Annual International Convention to Abigail Pesta, editor-at-large of Marie Claire. The Croly Award recognizes journalists who best capture the courage, vision, and spirit of Jane Cunningham Croly, a pioneering journalist who devoted her life to helping women improve their lives and expand their rights.
GFWC annually rewards one journalist who demonstrates a concern for the rights and the advancement of women in our society; an awareness of women’s sensitivity, strength, and courage; and/or an attempt to counteract existing sexism.
Abigail's article, "An American Honor Killing," is a poignant discussion of the tragic murder of Noor Almaleki at the hand of her father. With compassion and depth, the article explores the complexity of Noor growing up a child of conflicting worlds. The clash of these worlds eventually led to her death, and in response to this tragedy, a new community of people passionate about fighting honor crimes has arisen. Read the full article here.
