Youth Art Show

GFWC Delaware – GFWC Selbyville Community Club

In response to GFWC’s support of National Youth Art Month, the club received donations for prizes for the student’s winning art projects. This event’s success is helped by the support of the Selbyville Mayor, Town Council, and local businesses. The awards ceremony was held at the public library on the final Saturday of the month-long show. Fifty-six students received cash awards, and the mayor issued a proclamation naming March as Youth Art Month, which was advertised throughout the month. They received publicity in the Coastal Point local newspaper, which ran a series of articles before the show. They then published photographs of the artists with their displayed artwork and listed the winners’ names in various categories. WBOC’s Delmarva Life (TV Show) featured the SCC Art project on one of its shows after interviewing some club members and student artists.

Virtual Pet Contest

GFWC Illinois – GFWC Illinois Coal City Junior Woman’s Club

The GFWC Illinois Coal City Junior Woman’s Club hosted a pet photo contest. The pictures were sent to the chairman, who posted them with numbers on the club’s Facebook page. The fundraiser ran for a little over four weeks. There were 20 pet photos received. The virtual votes were $0.50 each and were paid through Venmo or PayPal. Prizes were 1st place $50 and 2nd and 3rd place $25 each. Doggy treats were given to all three. A club member donated the treats, and all the prizes to their homes.

Scarecrow Festival

GFWC Iowa – GFWC Akron Friendship and Service Club

The Annual Scarecrow Festival is a yearlong planning event with many members serving as co-chairs and chairs for this community-wide event. All members provide and sell baked pies, create scarecrows, and work the day of the festival to set up and clean up the city park where the event is held. This event has food, various children’s games, and activities for all ages. It is a unifying event for their community. This event was successful and brought recognition to GFWC in many ways.

Fun Pasta Sale

GFWC Louisiana – GFWC Houma Junior Woman’s Club

The GFWC Houma Junior Woman’s Club sold Fun Pasta whimsically shaped for seasons, holidays, and collegiate sports. The club earned 40% of sales. An online order page was set up, and members emailed and tested potential support for the link to the online catalog. Items could be purchased/shipped anywhere. The link was also shared on the GFWC of LA District 3 Facebook page and in the Junior Sparkle Newsletter.

Mystery Mansion

GFWC Maryland – GFWC The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase

The club members transformed its clubhouse into a thirteen-room Halloween community event. The theme of “Tell a Scary Story” was selected, and since attendees were as young as 5, they emphasized this as a PBS version of a haunted house. They traveled down the Yellow Brook road to the “Evil Stepmother and “Little Red Riding Hood.” After passing through the monsters from “Where the Wild Things Are,” guests entered an ancient library haunted by ghosts with “Ghostbusters” to the rescue. A haunted forest led them to an “Alice in Wonderland’s Tea Party.” And much more. Outdoor activities encouraged people to linger and enjoy the atmosphere under the stars. Boy Scout Troops and Middle and High School students volunteered, accumulating 900 student volunteer hours. Seven local musical groups got to share their talents with the community free of charge to the club.

Car Show

New Mexico – The GFWC Hot Springs Woman’s Club

The GFWC Hot Springs Woman’s Club hosted their first annual car show. They had over 40 sponsors and 70 car entries. Live music (donated) helped make the event lively and fun. Cars from various parts of New Mexico and Texas were on display. Vendors from these states sold various items. The club sold T-shirts and raffle tickets for gift baskets and had a concession stand. They invited residents of the New Mexico State Veterans Home to come and enjoy the day and served a meal to each of them.

In the Bag

South Carolina – GFWC Chapin Woman’s Club

GFWC Chapin Woman’s Club’s purse auction succeeded. Purses were purchased throughout the year at deep discounts. An online auction lasted two weeks, culminating with a Ladies Game Night. Buyers could register and bid online for purses during a two-week window. On the evening of Thursday, Oct. 13th, ladies came to play Flamingo Feud (a version of Family Feud). Tickets for the game night were sold for $50.00. The game is played with teams of 4. Winners were awarded “Flamingo Bucks,” which could be used to pay for their purse purchases. Finger food and soft drinks were provided. Live music added to the festive feeling while they ate and browsed all the purses on display. Guests could also purchase a raffle ticket for a special Brahmin bag. A fun evening with the proceeds from purse purchases benefiting the community – Purchase with a Purpose.

Bus Tours

GFWC South Dakota – GFWC Yankton Woman’s Club

The Yankton Woman’s Club completed four trips in 2022. Some were day trips, and others had overnights with stops along the way. The time on the bus allowed them to give a history of GFWC and their club while driving. They had handouts for the 45-54 people on the tour; many on the tours were not current GFWC members. They also pair people up with a GFWC member on the bus to provide more information to use this not only as fundraising but also as a membership driver!

Rolling Raffle

West Virginia – GFWC Parkersburg Woman’s Club

GFWC Parkersburg Woman’s Club (WV) sells rolling raffle tickets at each meeting. Half of the proceeds are added back to “the pot”. The other half goes to the treasury. A ticket is drawn at the end of the meeting. The winner then draws from a bag containing one white marble for each member and one colored marble. If that person draws the colored marble, she wins “the pot”. After each drawing, one white marble is removed to increase the chance of drawing the colored marble.

Deck the Fence

GFWC Wisconsin – GFWC Oconto Woman’s Club

Deck the Fence is held in conjunction with the community-wide Winter Wonderland display. The 900-foot wrought iron fence running along Brazeau Avenue, a main thoroughfare in their community, was decorated with 155 lighted 30” artificial wreaths and 8”x 11” placards containing memorials, dedications, or greetings. The club finances this project and maintains the electrical service, timer, signs, and decorations. A crew of 18 volunteers (13 members and five spouses) put the wreaths and signs up.
