GFWC - GFWC Resolutions

GFWC Resolutions

GFWC's voice comes directly from the local level. Policy positions are based on members' concerns. Resolutions form the foundation of all GFWC policy initiatives and determine our position on public policy issues and legislative action. These policy positions reflect the Federation's consensus on issues of international and national importance.

Our advocacy efforts span all areas of the lives of our members, their families, and their communities. GFWC has over 200 resolutions addressing issues including conservation, education, transportation safety, child labor, and crime prevention. Resolutions are organized into six categories that correspond loosely with our program areas: arts, conservation, home life, international affairs, public affairs, and organizational. GFWC members and clubs use resolutions in their pursuit of issues important to them.

The GFWC Resolutions Committee receives, considers, and presents resolutions that are pertinent to the work and objectives of GFWC. The Committee is comprised of seven members from different regions of the country who are appointed by the GFWC International President. The Resolutions Committee meets annually at GFWC Headquarters to review, discuss, and consider resolutions scheduled for action. Each resolution is reviewed once every four years.

Resolutions scheduled for consideration by convention delegates are published in the April/May issue of the GFWC Clubwoman magazine in the Call to Convention. The annual publication of the resolutions and proposed amendments gives members the opportunity to review the resolutions and discuss the proposed changes with their clubs prior to attending the Convention, where they will vote. This consideration and deliberation gives members a voice in shaping GFWC's legislative policies.

New resolutions and proposed amendments are discussed and debated by Convention delegates at GFWC International Convention business sessions. New resolutions and proposed amendments to existing resolutions are adopted or lost by a majority vote.

Our membership is large and diverse with clubs pursuing interests in a wide variety of public policy issues. Some of the recent issues GFWC has examined include child labor, domestic violence, women's health, pay equity, identity theft, education, and conservation.
