Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month
September is Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month. Approximately 29,000 American women lose their lives to these cancers, which include ovarian, uterine, cervical, endometrial, fallopian, and vaginal cancers. Consider holding a club event this September to contact your members of Congress in support of heightened awareness of gynecological cancers and the importance of screening and early detection.
United Nations Day
The anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. It has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions, and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the organization. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that Member States observe it as a public holiday. GFWC was present at the signing of the United Nations Charter, and has supported the United Nations with our Resolutions for decades. Consider having a United Nations Day event in your state, district, or local clubs.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. GFWC has been key in supporting the Violence Against Women Act, subsequent reauthorizations of VAWA, and funding for VAWA programs. Also, the International Violence Against Women Act will soon be introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Consider organizing a letter writing campaign, a club legislative day, or a calling drive to your members of Congress this October. Tell them you support of fully funding all VAWA programs and passage of I-VAWA.
