Call to GFWC Board of Directors Meeting, September 4-7, 2008

Dear 2008-2010 GFWC Board of Directors Members,

This is your official Call to the 2008 GFWC Board of Directors Meeting to be held September 4-7, 2008, at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

We have a very busy four days planned for you focused on advocacy, outreach, and membership strategic planning. Our agenda includes:

• Advocacy and Outreach with a planned Legislative Day on the Hill
  
• Informative Speakers featuring:
  • Lilly Ledbetter, a GFWC Alabama club member since 1999, who is the individual behind the fight to end pay discrimination with her landmark case against Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Lilly will share her experiences in advocating for the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and talk about the skills, experience, and support she gained and realized as a member of a GFWC club.
  • Richard Kimball, president of Project Vote Smart, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that collects and distributes information on candidates for public office in the U.S., who will share with us the importance of exercising one’s civic duty in becoming educated about current issues and affairs and voting.
  • Sarah Sladek, president and CEO of Limelight Generations, who will lead us in an interactive session to help us focus our energies on generational recruitment, retention, and marketing.
    Work Sessions focused on identifying challenges and seeking solutions to membership recruitment and retention
    
• Tours and Special Events including a GFWC Headquarters Reception and Tour on Friday afternoon, optional performance of The Capitol Steps on Saturday night, and a special GFWC wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery on Sunday afternoon (scheduled for 1:15pm)

According to GFWC Bylaws, Article IX, Section 2, the GFWC Board of Directors is comprised of the following:

A. Elected Personnel:  GFWC Officers, Presidents of State Federations, and Directors of Junior Clubs of State Federations provided they are voting members of the State Executive Committee, Presidents of each GFWC Region, and the GFWC Director elect of Junior Clubs.  The President of a State Federation shall be the official representative of that State Federation.

B. Appointed Personnel:  The members of the six Departments, chairmen of Standing and Special Committees, members of the Budget and Finance Committee, members of the Constitution & Bylaws Committee, members of the Leadership Committee, members of the Long Range Planning Committee, members of the Membership Committee, members of the Resolutions Committee, and the Chairmen of Special Projects.

C. Ex-officio:  GFWC International Past Presidents.

In addition to those mentioned above, the members of the Standing and Special Committees not included above, Region and State Officers, and Mentors are invited to attend as non-voting guests.

ACCOMMODATIONS

All meeting participants are responsible for making their own travel reservations to and from the Washington, D.C., area as well as securing their own hotel reservations at the Key Bridge Marriott.  Reservations need to be made by August 12, 2008, in order to secure the group rate of $169 night (plus applicable taxes).

BOARD PACKET

You will receive your board packet containing the meeting agenda and other pertinent materials when you register on-site at the GFWC Registration area located at the Key Bridge Marriott. Registration will be open during the following days and times:

• Thursday, Sept. 4 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.
• Friday, Sept. 5  7:30a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

• Thursday – Evening Business Casual
• Friday – Day   Business Attire

• Sunday – Morning  Travel Attire*

*If you will be attending the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, please be aware that personal appearance and dress of persons attending this ceremony should adhere to the dress standards expected of such dignified occasions. At a minimum the following dress code will be followed:

  • Casual slacks, skirt, or dress
  • Appropriate shoes
• Men
  • Collared shirt
  • Casual slacks

• The following attire is not considered appropriate for participation in the ceremonies
  • Blue jeans
  • Patched pants
  • Shorts of any kind, except when part of an established uniform (i.e., Scout uniforms, foreign military uniforms, and period military uniforms)
  • Tank, halter, or tube tops or shirts that expose the midriff
  • T-shirts
  • Shower-type shoes
