It's WHRC Wednesday! September is both Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month and Prostate Health Month. GFWC has worked on the latter–with the Spring 1993 "Clubwoman" article "What Every Woman Should Know About Prostate Cancer," for example–but we have focused more often on the former, especially during the administration of GFWC President Katie Ozbirn (1960-1962).
Ozbirn took up the torch of cancer detection and prevention from her GFWC predecessors, choosing to home in on gynecological cancers. In 1958 GFWC honored Dr. Papanicolaou, who developed the smear test that is now named for him; three years later, we partnered with the American Cancer Society to launch "Conquer Uterine* Cancer," a comprehensive program in which our part was to get clubwomen, and their friends and family, to undergo pap smears and make them a regular part of their annual physical exam.
There's scope for a lot more research into this program, to learn its impact on women's health. (Hint hint to anyone looking for a research project…) In the meantime, here are just two examples from the WHRC collections: the introduction to an article by Dr. Papanicolaou from the March 1961 issue of "Clubwoman," and three of the 'pledge cards' returned by GFWC clubs promising to "report the number of our members that have a physical checkup, including a 'Pap' smear, within the year April 1961 – April 1962."
📷 "Dramatic News in Uterine Cancer," by Dr. George N. Papanicolaou, "General Federation Clubwoman" March 1961. Magazine collection, MAG 1961.03
📷 "Conquer Uterine Cancer" pledge cards returned by clubs in Connecticut, Oregon, and North Carolina, October 1961. Program collection, PRO 1960-1961 f53
*Although the pap smear can help detect cervical cancer, in the early 1960s it appears that it was described instead as a test for "uterine cancer." If any historians of medicine are reading this post and want to weigh in, please do!
P.S. It should be noted that "Dr. Pap" achieved this with the extremely intense assistance of his wife Andromachi, who was not only his lab assistant, she also underwent a daily smear for over two decades while her husband was refining the procedure. … See MoreSee Less

GFWC was honored to be at the White House in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. President Biden authored the first VAWA in 1994 as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and has been involved with every reauthorization since then. We are proud to join Members of Congress, key national advocates, and survivors to celebrate progress and acknowledge challenges ahead.
Highlights include meeting President Joseph Biden and Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
GFWC is committed to supporting women and victims of domestic and sexual violence under the banner of our Signature Program.
