It’s WHRC Wednesday! May 6-12, 2025 is National Nurses Week, a time to celebrate and honor nurses and the critical role they play in our lives. Today, let’s take a look at a Community Improvement Project that did just that in the 1960s: “The Residence Halls of Grady Memorial Hospital,” accomplished by the Fifth District, Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, winning 2nd place in the Urban Division of the CIP Contest for 1966-1968.
This intensive project brought 25 clubs together to tackle the communal living areas of six student nursing residence halls at Grady Memorial Hospital. Clubwomen started scholarships, raised funds, sourced donations of furniture and appliances, and got to work scrubbing, painting, and decorating multiple kitchens, rec rooms, and lounges, as detailed in their contest application. But since this post is for Nurses Week, let’s redirect to the recipients of this work: the nurses themselves.
By the mid-1960s, Grady’s two separate, segregated nursing programs had merged into one School of Nursing. In the same era, bachelor degree-based nursing programs began to be more popular, leading to a decline in enrollment at hospital-based training schools. Grady Memorial is a public hospital, and at the time they lacked a fundraising auxiliary; while “one third of all health careers in the state of Georgia” began there, by 1966 residence conditions were dismal and morale was low. Thanks to the clubs of the Fifth District GFWC Georgia, the improvements to the dorms (and the financial and emotional support provided by the clubwomen to the students themselves) helped greatly reduce the student drop-out rate from 48% in 1966 to 10% in 1967.
📷Photo of a party thrown by one of the participating clubs in the refreshed rooftop lounge, 1967.
💌Thank you note from the freshman class of student nurses to the President of the Sandy Springs Junior Woman’s Club, October 1967.

Turn Awareness into Action for Mental Health
Every year since 1949, when Mental Health America founded Mental Health Awareness Month in May, GFWC has been at the forefront promoting public awareness activities to educate the masses on this prevalent and ever evolving health concern.
Mental health affects everyone in one degree or another on a personal level. You may experience a mental health crisis due to any significant life occurrence(s) or maybe you have a family member who has been personally impacted.
Regardless of your personal experience with mental health illnesses, let's collectively rally to do all we can to educate the public about the importance of taking care of one another and let's advocate to remove the stigma associated with it.
Visit the @Mental Health America to learn more on this subject and how you too can become an advocate of action. For more information on activities, visit: mhanational.org/mental-health-month/action-guide/
Also, don't forget to checkout The Yellow Tulip Project, founded by Julia Hansen and her mother Suzanne Fox, GFWC Honorary Chairman. The organization's purpose is to let people know that "Hope Happens" and we need to come together as a community to smash the stigma surrounding mental health disorders.
