![Its WHRC Wednesday! May is Jewish American Heritage Month, so lets take a look at one of the Jewish clubwomen who helped make a vital difference in her community: Julia Segal Swett (1881-1957) of Portland, Oregon. Julia was born in Kansas, and moved with her family to Oregon as a teenager. In 1900 she married Isaac Swett, a Portland lawyer who had immigrated to Oregon as a young boy. She and Isaac were both extremely active in the local community; he helped to found Portlands Jewish Welfare Federation, for example, and she belonged to the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage. Both were active in the Neighborhood House, a settlement house-type organization helping the less-fortunate of the Portland community. In an oral history interview recorded in the 1970s, their daughter Marguerite recalled that her mother was President of the Council of Jewish Women for several terms and did a lot of work with organizations, but when my father lost his voice, she went down [to the Jewish Welfare Federation] and worked with him. When he passed away [in 1921], she took over his position. Marguerite also noted that during WWII, Julia was active in sponsoring refugees. The GFWC Mid-Biennial Council Meeting for 1915 was held in Portland, and local clubwomen turned out to make their peers welcome. The souvenir program features photos of many members of the local planning committee, concluding with this portrait of Mrs. Swett, in her role as President of the local National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) chapter. The Oregon Daily Journal (June 2, 1915) compiled a handy list of meetings, exhibitions, and open houses planned for the GFWC members, and noted that the Council... will be at home to their friends and [to] all interested in the work of their organization at the Neighborhood House. In the early 20th century, many local chapters of the NCJW across the US belonged to their respective state Womens Club Federation, the better to coordinate efforts with their fellow clubwomen as they worked to improve community conditions. 📷 Julia Segal Swett, pictured in the souvenir program of the GFWC Mid-Biennial Council meeting for Portland, Oregon, 1915. #clubwomeninhistory #WomensHistoryisAmericanHistory #JewishAmericanHeritageMonth](https://www.gfwc.org/wp-content/plugins/custom-facebook-feed-pro/assets/img/placeholder.png)

![Its WHRC Wednesday! Were in the midst of National Womens Health Week, and since GFWC has been a long-time advocate for improving womens health, we could pick just about any decade to find something to share. The wheel of chance spins... and we land in the 1930s, when GFWC was making a major push to educate women about cancer detection and prevention. In this era, under the leadership of GFWC Presidents Grace Morrison Poole (1932-1935) and Roberta Campbell Lawson (1935-1938), we went hard in the fight against cancer. To us, it was literally a battle: partnered with the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC), we created the Womens Field Army, with state-wide Commanders working with women and womens clubs. The GFWC Division of Public Health for 1935-1938 created a new Cancer Education Program, which stated firmly that women must educate themselves about, and take measures to prevent, the outstanding menace to women in the prime of life because the preservation of the health of women ... is the greatest single guarantee of national stability. In our archives, we saved a clipping from the ASCC magazine circa 1938 with a photo of GFWC members receiving awards for their work. The caption read, Four of the five women honored by the Board of Directors of the American Society for the Control of Cancer at their annual dinner on March 4th at the Hotel Roosevelt in New York City [are pictured here]. Reading from left to right: Mrs. Harry W. [Viola M.] Smith, Commander of the New Hampshire Division of the Field Army; Dr. Anna C. Palmer, eighty-two-year-old President of the Cured Cancer Club; Dr. C.C. Little; Mrs. Edith A. Ritchie, Georgia Commander who received the medal first since the dinner was on her birthday; and Mrs. Gustav [Lillian H.] Ketterer, Pennsylvania Commander. Mrs. F.H. [Eleanor B.] Clausen, Wisconsin Commander, also received her award but because her plane was delayed by bad weather, she arrived three hours after the picture was taken. (Who can relate to that problem? Poor Eleanor!) Theres more to know, as always; I was particularly interested in 82 year old Dr. Palmer, who founded the Cured Cancer Club in 1938 as an 18-year breast cancer survivor, helping to show women that the diagnosis was no longer a death sentence. Ill link to an article about the ACSS, GFWCs Field Army, and Dr. Palmer in the comments if, like me, youd like to know more. 📷 Awards for Distinguished Service, 1938. It’s WHRC Wednesday! May 6-12, 2025 is National Nurses Week, a time to celebrate and honor nurses and the critical role they play in our lives. Today, let’s take a look at a Community Improvement Project that did just that in the 1960s: “The Residence Halls of Grady Memorial Hospital,” accomplished by the Fifth District, Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, winning 2nd place in the Urban Division of the CIP Contest for 1966-1968.
This intensive project brought 25 clubs together to tackle the communal living areas of six student nursing residence halls at Grady Memorial Hospital. Clubwomen started scholarships, raised funds, sourced donations of furniture and appliances, and got to work scrubbing, painting, and decorating multiple kitchens, rec rooms, and lounges, as detailed in their contest application. But since this post is for Nurses Week, let’s redirect to the recipients of this work: the nurses themselves.
By the mid-1960s, Grady’s two separate, segregated nursing programs had merged into one School of Nursing. In the same era, bachelor degree-based nursing programs began to be more popular, leading to a decline in enrollment at hospital-based training schools. Grady Memorial is a public hospital, and at the time they lacked a fundraising auxiliary; while “one third of all health careers in the state of Georgia” began there, by 1966 residence conditions were dismal and morale was low. Thanks to the clubs of the Fifth District GFWC Georgia, the improvements to the dorms (and the financial and emotional support provided by the clubwomen to the students themselves) helped greatly reduce the student drop-out rate from 48% in 1966 to 10% in 1967.
📷Photo of a party thrown by one of the participating clubs in the refreshed rooftop lounge, 1967.
💌Thank you note from the freshman class of student nurses to the President of the Sandy Springs Junior Woman’s Club, October 1967.

Turn Awareness into Action for Mental Health
Every year since 1949, when Mental Health America founded Mental Health Awareness Month in May, GFWC has been at the forefront promoting public awareness activities to educate the masses on this prevalent and ever evolving health concern.
Mental health affects everyone in one degree or another on a personal level. You may experience a mental health crisis due to any significant life occurrence(s) or maybe you have a family member who has been personally impacted.
Regardless of your personal experience with mental health illnesses, let`s collectively rally to do all we can to educate the public about the importance of taking care of one another and let`s advocate to remove the stigma associated with it.
Visit the @Mental Health America to learn more on this subject and how you too can become an advocate of action. For more information on activities, visit: https://mhanational.org/mental-health-month/action-guide/
Also, don`t forget to checkout The Yellow Tulip Project, founded by Julia Hansen and her mother Suzanne Fox, GFWC Honorary Chairman.
