GFWC Takes a Stand Against Elder Abuse
June 9, 2022
According to the National Council on Aging, up to five million older Americans are abused every year, and the monetary loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion annually. This June 15, join GFWC in taking a stand against elder abuse by wearing purple and participating in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This observance was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization to promote understanding of elder abuse in communities around the world. Now, it is an opportunity for everyone to learn about and raise awareness of the abuse and neglect older individuals face, often at the hands of their caretakers.
Elder abuse includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect, and abandonment. To learn more about recognizing the signs of elder abuse and for additional information, visit the National Council on Aging’s website.

When Wanda Taylor retired, she was excited to be able to get back into the activities and hobbies she loved. After joining a local gardening club, she soon met another woman with the group who introduced her to GFWC Ossoli Circle, in Tennessee, and she knew GFWC would be the right fit for her.
Success For Survivors Scholarship
Each year, GFWC awards scholarships to help intimate partner abuse survivors obtain a post-secondary education that offers a chance to reshape their future by securing employment and gaining personal independence.

GFWC Lawrence Classics Club
The GFWC Lawrence Classics Club (Kansas) has 19 members, and it’s an incredible mixture: one charter member has been involved since 1997; one member has been part of GFWC since 1960; there are a mother and daughter pair who are 2nd and 3rd generation clubwomen; four members are Boosters; and their youngest member only graduated from college last year. This assorted group shares the same values about volunteerism and puts them into action.
